Reminder of Fall matches with MGS:
Saunton Golf Club and Saunton Sands Hotel (the golf courses are about two miles from the hotel),
North Devon, UK
Arrive, Saturday September 8th, 2012 - Depart Friday, September 14th, 2012.
Saunton Golf Club is home to two of the great mature links golf courses of the World. The pair of Championship courses is located in the Braunton Burrows of North Devon less than ½ mile from the Atlantic Ocean set in the towering dunes that form the backdrop to their magnificent location. The basis for the present East Course was laid out under the direction of the renowned course architect W. Herbert Fowler in the 1920’s and so began the reputation as one of the finest links courses in the country. Numerous well respected writers and golfers consider the Saunton links courses among the best in the UK, with Golf World’s latest survey of the World’s Best 100 Courses ranking the East Course at No 60 between Valderrama and Royal Troon. Golf Monthly also gives the two Saunton courses high rankings of the best courses in UK and Ireland with the East at No.21 and the West in their Top 200. National Championship golf is played regularly over both courses with the East Course hosting many R & A and EGU tournaments during the recent past. The West course will be used in 2012 by the English Golf Union for the Mid Amateur Championships, Logan Trophy. The East Course was host to the South West Amateur Championships and West of England Championships in 2011.
Saunton is on the north coast of Devon near the town of Barnstaple. The nearest airport is Exeter, but flying in to either London Heathrow or Gatwick and then taking an internal flight to Exeter, driving, or taking the train is best. One will need a car from Exeter airport as from Exeter airport Saunton is 55 miles and will take 1.5 hours by car. Saunton is 200 miles from Heathrow and will take 3.5 hours by car. The train will be the most relaxing option as apparently there is a good fast train service from London to Exeter, but cost wise it would be cheaper to drive from Heathrow. We will absolutely need to investigate travel arrangements further.
